FEMA launched a new tool allowing individuals to purchase a National Flood Insurance Program policy completely online
It is now easier than ever for Wisconsin residents to prepare for the devastating financial consequences of flooding. Today, FEMA launched a new tool allowing individuals to purchase a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy completely online through Floodsmart.gov. The service is accessible nationwide to anyone living in one of the nearly 22,700 participating NFIP communities.
This initiative aligns with the America First Resilience Strategy, which emphasizes a risk-informed approach empowering citizens to protect their property and reduce dependence on federal assistance. FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton highlighted that the digital purchase option cuts bureaucracy and lets users obtain a quote and policy in just minutes.
Through the new self-service digital purchase option on Floodsmart.gov, users can quickly obtain a quote by providing basic property details. Applicants then have the flexibility to finalize the purchase online immediately or share quote details with a licensed insurance agent. Floods remain the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States, and this streamlined process aims to expand coverage among policyholders, including the roughly 10,800 policyholders in Wisconsin currently carrying $2.66 billion in coverage.
