With colder temperatures approaching Wisconsin’s annual winter heating disconnection moratorium is currently in effect to help protect consumers unable to pay their utility bills stay warm. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) warns about scammers pretending to be utility company representatives. Michelle Reinen is with DATCP.
The scammers’ goal is to use high-pressure tactics and make their targets act out of fear before they can pause and think clearly about the request.
If you are contacted about a disconnection and are unsure of the status of your account you should not listen to cold callers or click on links received. Instead reach out to your utility provider to verify the information you receive. If you are a victim of this scam, or any scam, you can contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline by phone at 1-800-422-7128 or by email at DATCP Hotline at wi dot gov.
