Chequamegon Volleyball Battles Through Home Invite

The Chequamegon volleyball team battled through a full day of competition Saturday at the Chequamegon Home Invite, picking up two victories while coming up just short in several hard-fought matches.

The Screaming Eagles opened the tournament against Mellen, dropping the first two sets 25-20 and 25-17. Chequamegon then faced Drummond, falling 25-19 and 25-20.

In their third match, the Screaming Eagles took on Hurley and again battled hard before falling 25-12 and 25-22.

Chequamegon bounced back in its fourth match of the day with an impressive performance against Phelps. The Screaming Eagles earned a straight-set victory, winning 25-22 and 25-15.

Chequamegon closed out the tournament with another matchup against Hurley, this time coming away with a thrilling three-set victory. The Screaming Eagles won the opening set 25-13 before Hurley answered with a 25-19 win in the second set. Chequamegon then dominated the deciding set, 15-5, to finish the tournament with a 2-3 record.

Several Chequamegon players turned in strong individual performances throughout the day. Kaydence McKuen led the offensive attack with 28 kills, while Gretchen Eder added 23 kills.

Jalen Brunell provided 55 assists while also serving up seven aces and recording two solo blocks.

Abby Brenholt was a key contributor defensively, finishing the tournament with 68 serve-receive receptions and 31 digs.

Despite the 2-3 tournament record, Chequamegon showed plenty of fight throughout the day, battling hard in each match and coming up just short in several contests.

Hurley went undefeated at 5-0 to claim the tournament championship.

Chequamegon is now 2-3 on the season and will return to action Thursday, Sept. 3, when the Screaming Eagles travel to Crandon to take on the Cardinals. The JV match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by varsity at 7 p.m.
