BUTTERNUT — The Butternut Lady Midgets hosted Prentice and Bruce Tuesday evening for a JV and varsity volleyball triangular, putting together a strong night of volleyball that included two varsity victories and a JV win.
The Lady Midgets varsity squad opened the night against Prentice. Butternut dropped the opening set 17-25 before rallying to take the second set 25-20. In a close deciding set, Butternut battled to a 15-13 victory to take the match.
Gianna Nahring led the Lady Midgets offensively with seven kills, followed by Alli Lueloff with five. Nahring and Bailey Pritzl each recorded three ace serves. Bailey Pritzl led the Lady Midgets’ defense with 12 digs, followed by Nahring with nine. Brooklynn Treml was a big defensive presence at the net, finishing with four solo blocks, while Lizzie Pritzl directed the offense with 19 assists.
In the second varsity match of the evening, Prentice defeated Bruce 25-22 and 25-21.
Butternut returned to the court for the final varsity match against Bruce. Once again, the Lady Midgets found themselves down after the opening set, falling 20-25. Butternut responded in a big way, taking the second set 25-16 before finishing off the comeback with a 15-11 victory in the deciding set.
Alli Lueloff led the attack with six kills, followed by Bailey Pritzl with five. Bailey Pritzl led from the service line with four aces, followed by Lueloff with three. Lizzie Pritzl led the defense with 14 digs, followed by Lindsey Kennedy with 10. Lueloff, Nahring and Brooklynn Treml each recorded one solo block, while Lizzie Pritzl finished with 12 assists.
“Great wins by our Lady Midgets. They really looked like a team coming together,” Coach Cindy Pritzl said.
JV Squad Earns a Win
The Butternut JV squad opened its night against Prentice, falling 18-25 and 11-25.
“We did a great job as a team, but we came up short,” Coach Renee Drott said. “Braelynn Taylor did a good job being the setter, and Meliah Hamann and Khloe Radlinger had some great hits. In the second game, we let the errors pile up.”
In the second JV match of the evening, Prentice defeated Bruce 25-12 and 25-18. The teams played a third set for additional playing experience, with Prentice winning 15-5.
Butternut closed out the night against Bruce and came onto the court ready to play. The Lady Midgets earned a hard-fought 25-18, 27-25 victory.
“We came in fired up,” Drott said. “Khloe Radlinger had a great match. Her serves were spot on. Grace Kuhn picked up her play and did some good things. Again, Braelynn Taylor did her job setting, and the girls all got hits. The biggest thing is we worked together in that match, and it showed. They can do great things!”
It was a great night of volleyball on the Lady Midgets’ home court, with both squads showing growth, teamwork and determination.
The varsity Lady Midgets improved to 6-2 overall, while the JV squad moved to 1-1 overall.
With two comeback victories for varsity and a strong finish by the JV squad, it was a great night for Butternut volleyball and another step forward for both teams as they continue to come together early in the season.
