Governor Tony Evers recently highlighted the expanding influence of Wisconsin's agricultural tourism industry
Governor Tony Evers recently highlighted the expanding influence of Wisconsin's agricultural tourism industry, recognizing working farms that generate crucial supplemental income by accommodating the public demand for authentic farm recreation, education, and fresh food. This growing sector not only supports individual farmers but also serves as a key driver of economic vitality for rural communities across the state.
A new economic impact study conducted by the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association (WATA) reveals that agritourism contributes over $765 million to the state economy. Based on 2025 visitor data from a sample of 240 agritourism destinations, the study recorded more than 4.3 million local and out-of-state visitors. WATA Executive Director Sheila Everhart emphasized that this data provides concrete proof of how farm destinations strengthen rural economies and enhance Wisconsin's overall economic reputation.
Agritourism encompasses a wide range of activities, including pumpkin patches, corn mazes, flower farms, orchards, vineyards, Christmas tree farms, and agricultural event venues. Funded through a USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant, the study demonstrated that visitor spending extends far beyond the farm gate, benefiting local restaurants, lodging providers, retailers, gas stations, and other community businesses. Additionally, agritourism allows agricultural producers to diversify operations, establish new revenue streams, and build lasting connections with consumers.
As consumer interest in authentic, locally sourced experiences continues to rise, Wisconsin farms are well-positioned for future growth. WATA plans to leverage the study's insights to collaborate with business and civic leaders, fostering continued development and awareness of agricultural tourism throughout the state.
